Location

Close to everything. Minutes’ walk to both the bars, cafes, shops and restaurants of Happo and the Tourist Information centre (home of the main bus station) and Echoland with café, bar and restaurant choices galore. Rental gear and onsens just around the corner, free valley shuttle bus stop on the doorstep and a quick walk down to the Central Train station. Japanese convenience stores are legendary for a good cheap feed, coffee or even a very reasonably priced beer 24 hours a day. Our local one is stone’s throw away.

There are so many options in Hakuba that we feel that being central is better than being based slope-side on any one particular hill. You’ll want to mix it us so centrally located on close to an arterial road for a quick morning getaway is best. The free valley shuttle bus is also a great service which runs regularly though the day and gives hassle-free access ski-fields up and down the valley. You’ll be able to catch it from right outside.

Getting to Hakuba

Hakuba is located 45km west of Nagano and 270km Northwest of Tokyo in the Nagano Prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan.

From Narita Airport

Unless staying in Tokyo it is worth considering your flight arrival and departure times depending on which travel options you would like available.

Shared Taxi

Probably the easiest and most stress-free way to get to Hakuba from Narita. If you are arriving later, have a heap of bags, have small children in tow or just a bit unsure of navigating the public transport system after a long flight this is a great option. The jumbo taxi will pick you up at the airport and take you directly here. It takes about 5 hours with stops along the way. Direct Bus

If your flight time works with a bus departure then the Nagano Snow Shuttle is a cheaper alternative to a shared taxi. The Nagano Snow Shuttle departs Narita daily around 9:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 20:30 (please check the website as these can change) and takes about 5 hours with stops along the way and drops you off at the Hakuba Base Camp in Echoland. By Train and Bus

This is quickest way to reach Hakuba it usually takes 3.5 to 4 hours depending on connections and is pretty straight forward. Japanese trains are renowned for their cleanliness and punctuality and if you need help along the way, just ask you’ll find everyone to be super helpful. Easily broken down into three steps. Express train from Narita to Tokyo Station. Take the Narita Express to Tokyo station which takes around 45 minutes and arrives on platforms 1 to 4. Next get the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Nagano. Lug your gear up to platforms 20 to 23, grab at ticket the ticket office, you’re looking for the Asama Shinkansen which takes around 90 minutes and departs regularly throughout the day. Finally, the bus from Nagano Station to Hakuba. Alpico buses run hourly from about 8:20 to 20:00, and depart from bus stop 6 at the East (Higashi) exit of the station. The bus trip to Hakuba takes about an hour depending on conditions. Be warned after 20:00 the only option is a taxi which can be costly.     

Another option is to get the Asama Shinkansen to Nagano from Ueno Station instead of Tokyo Station. The advantages are that distance to swap trains is a lot shorter, the trip to Ueno is a bit quicker (takes around 35 minutes) and Ueno Station is not as busy as Tokyo station. The disadvantage is that the Shinkansen boards first at Tokyo so when it is busy the seats available might be lacking. If you are heading to Ueno Station from Narita then you are looking for the Keiser Skyliner train.

Private car from Tokyo

When coming from the South or West part of Tokyo take the Chuo expressway to Okaya Junction and transfer to the Nagano expressway and exit at Toyoshina. Follow the signs to Hakuba, which will take you through Omachi on to #148 and Hakuba.

If coming from the North or East part of Tokyo then take the Kan-Etsu expressway to the Fujioka Junction and transfer to the Joshin-Etsu expressway and exit at Nagano. Follow the signs to Hakuba first along route 35, then turn left on route 19. You will then see a turn to your right to Hakuba on route 31/33.

Either route will take roughly 5 hours depending on conditions. If you are renting a vehicle ensure you pick the snow tyres option for driving around Hakuba in winter.
