  • “Great stay... We just spent 5 nights (Feb 2018) here and highly recommend it for the following reasons: super hospitable and down-to earth Kiwi hosts Greg and Jayne, comfortable, clean and quiet room, killer drying room, included gut-filling self-serve breakfast from 7a.m., 2 massive TV rooms equipped with Netflix (perfect entertainment after all day ski, onsen and feed...), quite cool mix of Austrian/Japanese inspired architecture and close walking proximity to several good restaurants and bus stops to ski areas - awesome experience. Thanks heaps!”
    — Peter B, New Zealand, February 2018
  • “Awesome Place, Awesome hosts! My partner and I just finished spending a week at Resort Inn White Silver and our hosts Greg and Jayne really made us feel at home. Great communication on the best way to get there from Jayne, and once we arrived a warm welcome. Super lovely room, and an inviting onsen to warm your sore muscles after a great day of skiing at the local resorts. A scrumptious breakfast every morning with some of the best coffee in Japan. We highly recommend this awesome place and can't wait to come back next year!”
    — Levyland, Wanaka, New Zealand, February 2018
  • “Great place to stay in Hakuba. Very friendly family run hotel, with easy access to the resorts via shuttle or walking. The owners went out of their way to help us (family of 4) get the most out of our week snowboarding in Hakuba, ranging from offering great advice on everything from which resorts to ski/ride in which conditions to where to get dinner, to giving us a lift to the slopes one morning so we could catch the first powder.”
    — MarkMG6284KP, Green Cove Springs, Florida, January 2018
  • "We have been here in July, and we were the only guests of the hotel. So, we don't know how's the situation during high season. But the hotel was very pretty, clean and quiet; perfect to stay for some days, while hiking the sorrounding mountains. The owner was very friendly and provided us for everything we needed. Great value for the price."
    — Letizia Fanciullacci, (IT) July 2018
  • "Clean room, fast free wifi and excellent service"
    — Leonie, (AU) May 2018
  • "Friendly, comfortable and beautiful place to stay. Felt like home. The owner Greg was very nice and very friendly. He recommended which ski resort to visit and where to eat and even drove us to the resort and then to the station the next day when we were leaving. We travelled from Paris to Hakuba via Moscow and had probably the best nights sleep I’d ever had in the bed here. Genuinely nice guy who runs a lovely place with his family."
    — Steve, (GB) April 2018
  • "The owner Greg went well beyond the call of duty to help us in many different areas."
    — Cory, (CA) March 2018
  • "Great location to shuttle bus stops. Walking distance to food and shops. Far enough out of main entertainment area to be nice and quiet."
    — Brett, (AU) March 2018
  • "Real great hospitality and guidance on Japan, Hakuba. Real clean, responsive service and knowledge of Hakuba and the best runs for each day."
    — Mark, (AU) March 2018
  • "This was a great place to stay and we were very comfortable and at home here! Greg and Jane were really helpful and helped us sort out ski gear, picked us up and took us to the station when we left. The ski bus stops right outside so it's easy to get to the different fields - we skied at Iwatake and Happo, both of which I'd recommend!"
    — Annie Robertson, (GB) February 2018
  • "The owners Greg and his wife were extremely nice and helpful. Always helped with bus routes and even dropped us off Places. Thanks for a great stay."
    — Joshua, (AU) February 2018

    — Jeremy, (AU) February 2018
  • "A wonderfully friendly and relaxed ski trip."

Location

Close to everything. Minutes’ walk to both the bars, cafes, shops and restaurants of Happo and the Tourist Information centre (home of the main bus station) and Echoland with café, bar and restaurant choices galore. Rental gear and onsens just around the corner, free valley shuttle bus stop on the doorstep and a quick walk down to the Central Train station. Japanese convenience stores are legendary for a good cheap feed, coffee or even a very reasonably priced beer 24 hours a day. Our local one is stone’s throw away.

There are so many options in Hakuba that we feel that being central is better than being based slope-side on any one particular hill. You’ll want to mix it us so centrally located on close to an arterial road for a quick morning getaway is best. The free valley shuttle bus is also a great service which runs regularly though the day and gives hassle-free access ski-fields up and down the valley. You’ll be able to catch it from right outside.

Getting to Hakuba

shinkansen01.jpg

Hakuba is located 45km west of Nagano and 270km Northwest of Tokyo in the Nagano Prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan.

From Narita Airport

Unless staying in Tokyo it is worth considering your flight arrival and departure times depending on which travel options you would like available.

Shared Taxi

Probably the easiest and most stress-free way to get to Hakuba from Narita. If you are arriving later, have a heap of bags, have small children in tow or just a bit unsure of navigating the public transport system after a long flight this is a great option. The jumbo taxi will pick you up at the airport and take you directly here. It takes about 5 hours with stops along the way. As this is a very popular service it is recommended to book well in advance. You can find out more and make reservations here: http://air.chuotaxi.co.jp/index.html?lang=en&tm=1508238851480#en-what

Direct Bus

If your flight time works with a bus departure then the Nagano Snow Shuttle is a cheaper alternative to a shared taxi. The Nagano Snow Shuttle departs Narita daily around 9:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 20:30 (please check the website as these can change) and takes about 5 hours with stops along the way and drops you off at the Hakuba Base Camp in Echoland. More information here: http://www.naganosnowshuttle.com/Route_Narita.aspx

Alpico Bus also has a bus leaving Narita daily around 11:00. This drops you off at the Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal. More information and the timetable here: https://www.alpico.co.jp/traffic/en/express/hakuba/narita/

By Train and Bus

This is quickest way to reach Hakuba it usually takes 3.5 to 4 hours depending on connections and is pretty straight forward. Japanese trains are renowned for their cleanliness and punctuality and if you need help along the way, just ask you’ll find everyone to be super helpful. Easily broken down into three steps. Express train from Narita to Tokyo Station. Take the Narita Express to Tokyo station which takes around 45 minutes and arrives on platforms 1 to 4. Next get the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Nagano. Lug your gear up to platforms 20 to 23, grab at ticket the ticket office, you’re looking for the Asama Shinkansen which takes around 90 minutes and departs regularly throughout the day. Finally, the bus from Nagano Station to Hakuba. Alpico buses run hourly from about 8:20 to 20:00, and depart from bus stop 6 at the East (Higashi) exit of the station. The bus trip to Hakuba takes about an hour depending on conditions. Be warned after 20:00 the only option is a taxi which can be costly.

Another option is to get the Asama Shinkansen to Nagano from Ueno Station instead of Tokyo Station. The advantages are that distance to swap trains is a lot shorter, the trip to Ueno is a bit quicker (takes around 35 minutes) and Ueno Station is not as busy as Tokyo station. The disadvantage is that the Shinkansen boards first at Tokyo so when it is busy the seats available might be lacking. If you are heading to Ueno Station from Narita then you are looking for the Keiser Skyliner train.
